straw man 03:00
sunshine, dancing through the orchard and the apples on the ground cold wind, whistling through the maples knocks the red leaves down I’ve been waiting all the summer long I’ve been waiting all the summer long straw man, standing looking lonely like he hasn’t got a friend hoping, hoping that the winter puts his troubles to an end I’ve been waiting all the summer long I’ve been waiting all the summer long

don't fly 02:35
don’t go, don’t go baby please don’t go I’m gonna have to miss you if you do that don’t you know? I won’t tell you that I loved you but I’ll say I woulda tried and I don’t like to do it but I mighta compromised if you see me when you’re leaving don’t you stop or turn to stare I’ll be where you find me if you ever find me there don’t fly, don’t fly baby please don’t fly it’s harder to be lovers when the other’s not nearby they’ll teach you how to smile when you don’t want to, yes they will and maybe you’ll forget about those sunsets on the hill they’ll tell you what to do and what to wear and what to say they’ll lie to you but maybe you’ll be better off that way don’t wait, don’t wait baby please don’t wait don’t wait to share your dreams until it’s much too late don’t go, don’t go baby please don’t go I’m gonna have to miss you if you do that don’t you know? don’t fly, don’t fly baby please don’t fly it’s harder to be lovers when the other’s way up high

I know waiting makes it sweeter but the time goes slow if you dream of the leaves the birds and the bees the grass on the ground and the bluebells all around I’ve seen Mother Nature shining like a silver queen the white winter snow in the pale morning glow the grass isn’t green but there’s ice on the mountain stream I guess some people see the cold and dark like loneliness but keep the warmth near this time of the year is beautiful too but the sky’s not quite so blue I’ve heard happiness and sorrow both are self-assured the black and the white the balance of light the long winter night is a darkness that shouldn’t be cured

new year 02:20
the yard was full of birds when I woke on new year’s day ice along the river, they were singin anyway the doves were in the dogwood with half a dozen jays the finches sang their love songs in the snow, while I sang mine my body didn’t know my head was full of last night’s wine and I don’t know if I have ever felt so fine I kissed a girl that night on the cheek when she was sleeping curled on the couch, watched her eyes while she was dreaming she made me wonder what about a secret’s so worth keeping and the yard was full of birds when I woke on new year’s day ice along the river, they were singin anyway the doves were in the dogwood with half a dozen jays

she says 03:40
she says no but I think that she means something else she says go when she hates being by herself she says please with a forked tongue behind her teeth there’ve been times when she’s said she’s confused and that she doesn’t know what she wants to do and I tell her that I don’t know just what that means she says nobody ever really wins she says love and she takes it back again she says wait and there’s no reason why I can’t there’s a certain way she looks at you communicating things that words can’t do but I don’t get it so I make believe that I know just what it means she says hey it’s a bright and beautiful day let’s go and find some shady trees and we can slip away I’m surprised but how can I say no? it’s like those times when she’s said she’s confused and that she doesn’t know what she wants to do and I can’t tell but maybe we both know just what that means
6.
I saw her picture hangin on the wall and I thought she was pretty I didn’t know her name so I found someone who could tell me I went away for a year but I came back and still I remembered I saw the braid in her hair in the snow on the 10th of December I want to ask her what she’s dreaming of Oh but her eyes look she’s got somebody she already loves She looks like she could be gentle and quiet and thoughtful and kind Her eyes are deep like the ocean and dark like a forest of pines She doesn’t look my way and that’s probably better She doesn’t know my name so I try to forget her I want to tell her there’s a flower she reminds me of oh but her eyes look like she’s got somebody she already loves

We can sleep in the poison ivy again I’ve seen those apple trees a hundred times since then can you remember how the Autumn came to an end? We can climb in the willows by the river’s side the water wasn’t deep, it wasn’t all that wide can you remember when we thought your dog had died? We can dance in the green grass in the summer shade the birthday cake was perfect you and your mother made can you remember all those nights I wish I could’ve stayed? We can say we’re watching movies in the room downstairs I used to run my fingers through your beautiful hair can you remember all the love we’ve ever shared?
8.
Mexican love, look at that yellow moon winter’s coming but still you left too soon Mexican love can’t feel your smooth brown skin I don’t think you’ll ever know the shape you’ve left me in Mexican love can’t see your long dark hair found a map of California, couldn’t find you there yes I know the reasons why you’ve got to go but those dark eyes would look so pretty in the New England snow
